Silo Systems Explained

Silo systems handle the storage and precise dosing of cement — and sometimes fly ash or other powder materials — forming the first critical stage of the batching sequence.

A standard cement silo is a vertical cylindrical structure typically ranging from 50 to 200 tons capacity. Cement arrives by tanker truck and is pneumatically transferred into the top of the silo. A filter unit mounted at the silo's apex captures dust generated during filling, preventing it from escaping into the surrounding air.

At the base of the silo, a screw conveyor doses the exact quantity of cement required for each batch, feeding it into the weighing hopper. This process is tightly controlled by the automation system, typically achieving accuracy within ±1%.

Level sensors continuously monitor cement inventory and alert operators before levels drop critically low, preventing unplanned production stoppages. Many modern silos also incorporate pressure sensors for both safety monitoring and fill optimization.

The most common maintenance issue in silo systems is "bridging" — cement hardening and forming an arch inside the silo due to moisture exposure, which blocks discharge. Vibrating discharge systems are often installed specifically to prevent this. Regular filter cleaning is equally important, both for maintaining discharge efficiency and for keeping dust emissions within regulatory limits.
